Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Guided Reading discusses various aspects of the exercise of modern political power in the Habsburg Monarchy on the basis of selected sources and secondary literature. The course offers a broad geographic overview, taking account of the regional variety of the Habsburg realm from the Austrian hereditary lands to the lands of the Hungarian Crown, from the Austrian Littoral to Bosnia-Herzegovina. The thematic units comprise the wars and peace orders from the Napoleonic Wars to the end of World War I., the domestic and external representation of monarchic power and the soft power of cultural resources as well as processes of political, social and economic integration and fragmentation.

Assessment and permitted materials

Class work will be evaluated on the basis of short written assignments, a presentation, and contribution to the general discussion.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

requirements for passing the class:
- the GR will be held in English, basic requirement for participating is very good command of the language in writing and speaking;
- 8 written assignments (600-800 words each) (50 % of the final grade)
- 1 presentation (15 % of the final grade)
- active participation in discussion (35 % of the final grade)
- regular attendance (students may miss up to two classes)
