Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The UE Course on “Methodology in Global History and Global Studies” is connected to the VO “Theories and Methods of Global History and Global Studies”, in which broader theoretical and methodological issues in global history will be presented and discussed. The participants are warmly invited to attend both courses, if applicable.

The UE Course on “Methodology in Global History and Global Studies” is centred around the reading and discussion of scholarly publications, with the view of analysing how the scholars have addressed key questions as: What is “global history”?; How do we “do” global history?; What are the implications of a global approach in the study of social and historical processes?

Besides expanding their knowledge on the theories and methodologies of global history, the participants will improve their skills in the analysis of scholarly texts. To this end, they will be also required to write a research project on a topic related to Global history.

Differently from a research paper, a research project implies a deeper level of self-reflexivity regarding key choices in the construction of research. Therefore, besides presenting the spatial and temporal context and the key questions of their research, in their global research projects the students will also reflect explicitly on why they have chosen that specific topic and those spatial and temporal units; they will ask themselves what “the global” actually is in their research; and they will highlight the challenges they have encountered in their research process and the ways they have addressed them.

Assessment and permitted materials

Each session will centre on one aspect of global history (e.g. periodization, comparison, etc.) and include:
 Group discussion and collective discussion of the assigned readings
 Group and collective discussions of the research projects.
 Clarifications, questions and comments on the issues presented during the lectures of the VO “Theories and Methods of Global History and Global Studies”
 Discussion of the global history projects (16 January)
