Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course is intended to convey an introductory knowledge of the historical auxiliary sciences and of archival science. It will offer an overview of the various disciplines which can be used for the description and analysis of historical source materials and their transmission. A few of the most important of these will be covered in somewhat more depth and with practical exercises.
Assessment and permitted materials
Four times in the course of the term, students will be required to submit written homework assignments consisting of practical exercises in paleography, chronology, and diplomatics. All relevant sources of information may be used in preparing these assignments.
At the end of the term there will be a written final examination. The use of Latin and (early) German dictionaries, Grotefend's manual of chronology, and dictionaries of abbreviations is permitted.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The minimum requirement for a passing grade consists of taking the final examination, submitting at least two of the homework assignments, and obtaining at least 50 out of 100 points awarded according to the following distribution: final examination 50 points, homework assignments 10 points each, active participation and attendance 10 points. Regular attendance is mandatory; two absences are permissible.
Examination topics
The examination will cover the material presented in the course. The presentations will be made available as study aids. Use of the basic literature is strongly recommended for better comprehension.
