Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Environmental history is currently seeing a new boom in the wake of the climate crisis and discussions about the Anthropocene. The methods workshop is designed to introduce, critically discuss and apply fundamental methods of environmental history that have been developed since the 1980s. From the very beginning, “the environment” has challenged historians to develop complex methods: Firstly, they had to deal with an increased number of non-textual sources, and secondly, analyzing these sources often required in-depth knowledge of the natural sciences and their history. Beyond the introduction to the more classic environmental history, the methodological workshop also explores more recent approaches to environmental history from the field of Anthropocene research and cultural studies, such as animal studies and actor network theory, the history of science and postcolonialism.
