Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Within the geographical and temporal scope of the course, various aspects of history and types of sources will be touched on. The aim is not a comprehensive introductory survey but problem-oriented exemplary insights into several areas of research and their typical sources. These areas include political and constitutional history, social history, gender history, history of criminality, religious history, history of education and economic history. Goals include understanding the contents of the selected texts, awareness of some important reference works on modern Austrian history, the comprehension and critical review of scholarly writing and the reading and discussion of sources. These will be practiced both orally and in writing. Most of the reading material is in German; some articles in English are included. A working knowledge of German is essential.
Assessment and permitted materials
Four times in the course of the term, written homework assignments dealing with the texts which have been read will be required. These assignments may be submitted in English if desired. Active participation during classes will be registered and factored into grades.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Minimum requirement for a passing grade is submitting at least three of the written assignments. Each assignment will contribute 20% to the final grade; the remaining 20% will be based on oral participation. Regular attendance is mandatory; two excused absences are permissible.
Examination topics
Correspond to the texts assigned for reading.
Reading list
A complete list of texts, as well as the texts themselves, will be made available via Moodle.
