Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Since its foundation in 1920, the League of Nations was not only an intergovernmental organization with a comprehensive claim in the fields of disarmament and peacekeeping, but also the organization that carried on humanitarian, economic and technical cooperation at the intergovernmental level. Lastly, the League of Nations was also a civil society project, which materialized in the League of Nations leagues of the individual states. The seminar will deal with the conceptions of and expectations towards the League of Nations, look at its form of organization and trace the significance of the League of Nations for the successor states of the Habsburg Monarchy on the basis of some policy fields, selected after a discussion within the seminar group (disarmament, state finances, mobility, minorities, trafficking in girls, health care, science).
In this seminar, the discussion of current research literature is closely linked to the work in the League of Nations Archive, which is accessible online.

Assessment and permitted materials

The following is required to successfully complete the seminar:
1) Active participation during the seminar. This requires
a) reading the preparatory literature
b) participating in the discussion of the texts in order to further develop the seminar topic
c) participating in group work to deepen the chosen topics by conducting research in the League of Nations archives and to prepare the seminar papers

2) the presentation/discussion of one's own research work in the seminar

3) a seminar paper of approximately 65,000 characters, (± 5%), including spaces, footnotes, title page, table of contents, bibliography, without graphics (= approx. 17 manuscript pages, 1½ line spacing, 12 pt.)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- active participation and compulsory attendance
- presentation of the seminar paper
- timely submission of the seminar paper: In order to ensure good scientific practice, the course instructor can invite students to a grade-relevant interview after submitting the seminar paper, which must be passed in order to receive a grade.

Assessment criteria:
All written (partial) performances to be uploaded to Moodle will be checked using the plagiarism software turnitin. The performance assessment is based on the following weighting:

- Participation in discussions including group work and various forms of feedback for other participants (constructive, factually correct contributions and commitment in discussing the presentations): 25 points
- Oral presentation incl. handout: 15 points
- Seminar paper: 60 points (the agreed deadline for submission must be met)

A total of 60 points are required for a positive assessment of the course, and the seminar paper must be positive (one opportunity to improve in the event of a negative result):
1. (very good) 100-90 points
2. (good) 89-81 points
3. (satisfactory) 80-71 points
