Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
History of Bulgaria offers students a comprehensive exploration of Bulgaria’s past from the medieval era through the Ottoman centuries and into modernity. The course emphasizes the complexities of Bulgarian society under Ottoman rule and situates these experiences within broader European and imperial contexts. By engaging with a wide range of primary sources, including chronicles, travelers’ accounts, archival materials, and visual culture, alongside key works of historical scholarship, students will critically examine how Bulgarian history both shaped and was shaped by regional and continental dynamics. The course highlights questions of identity, power, and cultural exchange, encouraging students to place Bulgarian history within the entangled narratives of European history.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance and active involvement in discussions in class, based on the weekly assigned readings (primary sources and secondary literature), are essential. Students will be asked to formulate five questions that encourage class discussion in the chosen week. In addition, each student is expected to do one oral presentation in class on a selected secondary literature (see additional readings) and submit two short critical essays (response papers, 5 pages max.), related to the main themes examined in the literature for the course.
Note: The instruction and course assignments will be in English, and students are expected to have a good command of English.
