The preliminary meeting for the excursion will take place on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024.

A digital introduction will take place on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024 at 1 p.m. (access via the Moodle page).

The stay in Berlin is planned from November 5th to 8th, 2024.

A first consultation hour to discuss the topics, a thesis and the methodological approach to the thesis will take place in December 2024 in virtual form. If there are any open questions about the thesis, another virtual consultation hour will be held. In both cases, information will be provided by email in good time.

The cost of the excursion is approximately EUR 550 per person (the exact price will be announced in the preliminary meeting). This includes hotel costs (overnight stay with breakfast), admission fees, guided tours, fees and a 4-day ticket for the Berlin public transport company.

Arrival and departure are independent and are not included in the price.

In addition, it is recommended that you take out travel/cancellation insurance so that you are not left with the (additional) costs in the event of a COVID-19 infection immediately before departure or during your stay in Berlin.

(If the excursion cannot take place on site in Berlin as planned due to a travel warning, COVID epidemic or similar, it would be carried out online via streams, videos and Moodle. Further information for registered students and students on the waiting list would then be provided in the preliminary meeting or sent out in mid-October.)

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The 20th century shaped the city of Berlin like no other century before. From the Empire, through the dictatorships of National Socialism and Socialism, through the division between two power blocs and reunification to the European Union. The diverse divisions of the city from a spatial, social, political, cultural, ethnic and gender perspective have created a unique spatial field of tension that shapes the lives of not only the residents of this city to the present day.
The excursion will explore the traces of the horror and violence of two dictatorships, as well as the Jewish and alternative counterworlds since the 1920s, away from the usual tourist hotspots. The coexistence of over 150 nationalities has been a topic of political and cultural debate since the 1960s and shapes Berlin's music, nightlife and households every day. The aim and method of the course are to clarify these phenomena and to experience them independently but in a guided manner.
