Aims, content and method of the course
The coming to terms with the history of National Socialism in Germany started from two traumas: that of the lost war and the enormous sacrifices among Germany's own soldiers and civilians, and that of unprecedented mass crimes committed by perpetrators from the midst of German society.
Both traumas were reflected in the reception of photographs showing victims of Nazi crimes. The former "Volksgenossen" reacted to images of corpses and half-dead bodies from the concentration camps liberated by the Americans and the British, which had been used briefly by the Allies for the purpose of pedagogical catharsis, with guilt defense and overwriting, through which the image of a German victim nation was established. The accompanying "visual amnesia" was followed by the return of the images of the crimes to an increasingly plural public since the mid-1950s. The following fifteen years were marked by the formation of a canon of images of National Socialist crimes that remained largely unchanged until well into the 1990s and was then modified again, not least under the influence of the Internet and the internationalization of Holocaust remembrance.
In this seminar, photographic history serves as the focus of a history of coming to terms with National Socialism, in which photography established itself quite early as a leading medium and important source genre. The main focus will be on German cultures of remembrance. Austria will be included comparatively.
