Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In historical international comparison, the state police apparatuses within Europe and North America show considerable differences even under democratic conditions. This applies not only to the institutional level, the question of powers and controls, but also to the relationship between citizenship and the executive.

Objectives
Based on the traditional police history, this course is dedicated to different areas of state regulatory politics in the course of the 20th century in Western Europe and the USA. The focus is on the question of how the executive branch and the population met in changing contexts, which continuities and breaks can be identified, and where recent trends point.

The process
The course is divided into seven larger thematic blocks.

1. the enforcement of central state power since the 18th century
2nd World War I: Conflict and order in the hinterland of the fronts
3. interwar period: democratisation attempts and front position against the left
4 The 'Long' Second World War: Police and Occupation Practices 1938-1949
5th Cold War and bourgeois self-confidence: Deviance and protest as an object of police action
Six. The new others: Police work since the 1990s between ethnicization and militarization
