War in the World of Islam and in the European West, including Jihad and Crusade

5.00 ECTS (2.00 SWS), SPL 7 - Geschichte
Continuous assessment of course work

Did the worlds of Islam and the European West share traits when it comes to war (and peacemaking) in the premodern era? How do Christian Holy War and Muslim Jihad compare? How much did religious ideology inflect warmaking (and peacemaking)? The seminar aims at addressing these issues through existing historiography; to do so, students will create a historiographical "state of the field" on particular questions of their choice.
