Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Jewry, Christianity and Islam as religions that have influenced the development of Europe; what is “church”?; why the course deals primarily with the Catholic Church; Dealing primarily with the constitutional history of the Catholic Church from the “beginnings” to the end of the Middle Ages, with excursus on church organizational structures in modern times and the present.
Structure of the course:
I. Introductory section: Organizational matters; Substance demarcation of materials and clarification of terms; in-depth works of research literature.
II. Antiquity: Development of church offices; Division into dioceses, ecclesiastical provinces and patriarchates; Significance of the Roman Church on the territory of the Roman Empire; Monasticism.
III. First Middle Ages: General Basics; church offices and ecclesiastical district divisions; spiritual and secular power in close connection; Monasticism.
IV. Second Middle Ages: General Basics; Establishment of canon law; further development of the papacy.

Assessment and permitted materials

Compulsory attendance (a maximum of three justified absences possible); Furthermore, cooperation is required and the timely completion of coursework is necessary. An exam will be held at the end of the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance (see above, “Assessment and permitted materials”); Collaboration in the form of requests to speak with appropriate content; Details about the courswork will be announced later; The assessment of the exam will constitute around half of the grade calculation.
