Die Faszination, die von der Geschichte Italiens ausgeht, ist bis heute ungebrochen. Das Seminar wird vor allem den Zeitraum von 1250 bis 1500 in den Blick nehmen. Gerade die spätmittelalterlichen Jahrhunderte gehören zu den interessantesten der italienischen Geschichte. Nord- und Mittelitalien waren zu dieser Zeit die führenden Wirtschafts- und Kulturlandschaften Europas. Die Umwälzungen, die von diesem Raum seit dem späten 13. Jahrhundert ausgingen, haben Europa verändert. Die Forschung spricht von „commercial revolution“ (R. S. Lopez), révolution scripturaire (J. C. Maire Vigueur) und „invention du politique“ (E. Crouzet Pavan). Und natürlich wird im Seminar Italien als Ursprungsland des Humanismus breiter Raum gegeben werde.
