Theories of development in the 19th and 20th century

4.00 ECTS (2.00 SWS), SPL 7 - Geschichte

Development failed as a socioeconomic endeavor, but the development discourse still contaminates social reality. The word remains at the center of a powerful but fragile semantic constellation. It denotes nothing; it is shapeless;a concept of monumental emptiness; But despite this, it operates as a mantle for sanctifying all kinds of interventions in the name of higher goals.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Development, the journal of the Society for International Development, rigorously and creatively followed the vicissitudes of that age. In its 50th anniversary, in 2007, the editors of the journal asked a group of prominent and knowledgeable actors, observers, and critics of the development enterprise a few critical questions. Here are some of the reactions:
Fatma Alloo (Tanzania): Development is one of the most abused words.
Peggy Antrobus (Barbados): The concept is so controversial [...] increasingly
associated with global economic and social injustice.
Smitu Kothari (India): Development is dangerous.
Wolfgang Sachs (Germany): Because development means just about
everything, from pulling up skyscrapers to putting in latrines, from drilling for oil to drilling for water, is a concept of monumental emptiness [...] It is a testimony to the power of ideas that an empty concept has towered over the discussions of half a century.
Jessica Horn (Uganda): For my generation, development has firmly established itself as an industry.
