Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Based on methods of Gender Studies, Cultural Studies and especially concepts of space, and by analysing sources like privileges, landregisters, charters, rabbinical responsa and religious texts, the seminary will present and analyse the cultural spaces in medieval Jewry in their Christian environment. Geographically it will cover the cultural space ,Ashkenaz’, the German speaking parts of the Holy Roman Empire with Jewish population.
The learning units will consist of an introduction and the joint reading of the texts prepared (put on moodle in advance).
Objectives:
Knowledge of concepts, definitions and methods of Cultural Studies; Knowledge of the different cultural spaces in medieval Jewry: law, religion, house and family, community, erudition, economic life; knowledge of cultural spaces shared with Christians: language, calendar, taste, polemics, popular religion etc.; analysis of different types of sources based on methods of Cultural and Gender studies; active discussion, good presentation, writing of an essay according to good scientific practice.

Assessment and permitted materials

This seminary is a course with continuous assessment of students' performance, personal attendance is compulsory (you may miss the class up to two times).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

No previous knowledge is required. The monitoring is based on the presentation and active discussion of the prepared texts (25%). On one of the presented topics, a presentation of 10 minutes has to be given (25%) and a paper of 12 pages has to be submitted (50%).
