Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture series summarises Irish history from the Mesolithic era up to the end of the 20th century. The lectures will be held in the English language. Students are expected to make use of the comprehensive reading list, especially the English-language books. Experience has shown that candidates who depend solely on lecture notes and have not consulted books from the reading list generally receive a low grade.
Assessment and permitted materials
Marks for the lectures will be based on a two-hour written examination at the end of the semester. Three further examination dates will be arranged: at the beginning, the middle and the end of the following semester. Exam candidates have to answer two questions from a choice of over twenty but must choose a) a topic before 1800; b) a topic after 1800. At the end of their written answers exam candidates have to name for each of their two answers at least two works in the English language which they have read. The candidates' examination answer papers can be in either German or in English.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Student will be expected to gain an overview of Irish history down through the ages.
Examination topics
Besides the text, the lecturer will use images, film and historical recordings. Each lecture will be recorded and placed on the hompage:www.univie.ac.at/digitale-medien/vorlesungen
