070206 VO Introduction to the concentration "Middle Ages" in the MA (2016W)

5.00 ECTS (2.00 SWS), SPL 7 - Geschichte

The basic MA-level introduction to big themes in the historiography of the European Middle Ages: Theology and Society; ethnicity and nationalism; social bonds; rituals; sanctity and monarchy; violence; women, gender and masculinity; the economy; the town... The MA-program for the first semester demands the simultaneous attendance of the Lektürekurs 070197 taught by Prof. Lutter, and the two courses have been designed to function in tandem. While the SPL cannot enforce this, not pairing will come at costs in terms of learning and time to degree.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lectures will present each week how several historians have dealt with one big theme ("state of the field", or in German "Stand der Forschung"). Readings will be assigned for each week as well, and the theme will be dealt with in a later week in Prof. Lutter´s Lektürekurs (to give you time to produce her assignments with the lecture as a background).

Assessment and permitted materials

Final exam -- no materials brought in unless otherwise stated. The exam can be written in German, English, or French. One part will involve the discussion of 2 themes (out of 3 proposed) based on the lecture and readings, the other part will entail writing an abstract of one article to chose out of two proposed (one will be in English, one in German). Each part has to be passed to pass the exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

As is stated in the description of the MA cursus, students should be able to read English and understand English. The exam can however be written in German. And as should be the case in any serious MA program, you will have to read a lot.
