Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course offers a broad overview of the history of historiography with a focus on the increasing criticism of the ‘Great Men Theory’ and the development of approaches to a ‘history from below’ from the 19th century onwards. Starting from the question ‘Who writes whose history and for what purpose?’, our research interest is centred on the relationship between history, power and domination. We will analyse how new approaches to historiography have attempted to question existing power relations and hegemonic discourses. Key topics include, among others, the debates between historicism and historical materialism, the influence of the Annales School, the approaches of historical social science and subaltern studies and the debate on post- and decolonial approaches.
Participants will respond to weekly texts based on key questions and then discuss these in the course. Students act as moderators who prepare a short input, raise questions and coordinate the discussion.

Assessment and permitted materials

Weekly presence and committed participation in the course, willingness to read and discuss, ongoing written and oral work tasks (e.g. reading, research, thesis papers, presentations, moderations).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Timely submission of all requested written assignments; regular active participation in the discussion; at least one oral presentation with PowerPoint.
