The First Crusade, launched in 1095, was an unprecedented event -- a mass movement that took armed Christians all the way to Jerusalem, stormed in July 1099, with attendant massacres. It raises many questions: Causes and motivations of the various participants; causes and motivations of the massacres; scope of these massacres. From a cultural history angle, one can investigate as well the thought-world of the participants, and survey so-called trans-cultural interactions.
Aim of the class is the production of a competent seminar paper based principally on the medieval primary sources (as opposed to the existing historiography). While the language of instruction will be English, students should not shy from using German if needed in discussion (there is also linguistic flexibility for assignments)

Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
The bulk of the final grade will be determined by two small written exercises of 3-4 pages, a first draft of the final paper, the final paper, a presentation, and active and intelligent class participation (which can take place in English or in German). The final grade will take into account improvements to the first draft (made on the basis of written and oral feedback on the first draft) -- the instructor grades with an eye to progress. All written assignments can be produced in English, in German, or in French.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The production of a final paper (improving on a first draft with the help of the instructor's comments), exploring an issue of the student's choice, on the basis of late eleventh-century and early twelfth century primary sources.
