Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Starting from economic, cultural and political fault lines dating back into the 19th century, the proseminar initially focuses on the process of social polarization in the aftermath of World War I. In a second step, those dynamics are examined that in the late 1920s led to an intensification of political differences and finally ended in a coup d'état "from above" in 1933/34. The main part of the course is then devoted to the changes in Austria's political, social and cultural structure at various levels during the dictatorship of Engelbert Dollfuß and Kurt Schuschnigg. The course concludes with an examination of the conceptual history of the 1933-1938 dictatorship as an example of political identities in the Second Republic.
