Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The growth of early modern states - first in Western Europe and then in other regions- is one of the key political development in Early Modern Europe. Centralization of political power on the one hand side and its ability to command resources from society on the other is a process which had developed over several centuries . This process could be observed in European monarchies and the few non –monarchical /republican states as well. Astute monarchs in England, France and Spain further consolidated their power by different means, institutions, and tax policies. They asserted royal power over the church. These pattern setting was followed by northern, eastern monarchs and in the southern – Mediterranean area of Europe and contributed to the growth of nation-state in Europe.
In so far the seminar about European Monarchies in Early modern Times offers a wide range of possibly topics to explore, present and discuss.
