Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to acquire basic understanding of the structure and function of (historical) academic texts and to develop basic skills for understanding and using such texts. In the first part of the course, we will discuss the formal and structural characteristics of historiographical texts. What characterizes them? How do they operate? How do I read them? The second part focuses on the history of historiography. On the basis of selected original texts, we will examine various traditions of modern historiography from antiquity to the present day. These texts will be contextualized with regard to the history of science, with an emphasis on the changing “virtues” and ethos of historiography. The participants develop (or deepen) their ability to recognize, historicize and criticize historical narratives .
