Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Slave plantations (in the Americas) and demesne lordships (in Eastern Europe) constituted two social and economic systems coexisting in the Early Modern World. They emerged during the 16th and 17th centuries in different parts of the world and left a deep imprint on these regions until the 19th century. Both were based on coerced labour and produced commodities for supra-regional markets. A comparative approach should enable us to find out common features and differences.
The subject is suited for a Proseminar, dedicated to introduce the participants to a research field and the debates, methods and sources related to it, in several respects: the slave plantation and the lordly domain are to fundamental institutions of the early modern period; a number of still ongoing debates are connected with them; edited sources and empirical studies are numerous; systematic comparison is an important method of historical research.
Good (passive) knowledge of English is required; knowledge of a Slavic language is welcome.
