Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Introduction to central questions in the history of science since 1900, including: Society, Culture and Scientific Changes around 1900; Science and Weaponry in the First and Second World Wars; Genetics and Eugenics in international perspective; Science, Idology technocratic Modernity and Dictatorship; Science, Technology and Culture in the Cold War; Science, Technology and Economy in the Information Age; Science and the Public Sphere; Changing Gender Roles and Representations of Gender in the Sciences
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation in weekly discussions; brief responses to reading questions communicated each week in advance. A brief (5-7 page) paper discussing and critically analysing a selected primary or secondary text from the course.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Introduction to central issues in the history of science since 1900 from the perspective of general history and cultural studies. Practice in critical discussion and analysis of primary and secondary texts.
Examination topics
General introductiory remarks by the instructor, common discussion of selected primary and secondary source texts, (optional) reports by students on selected topics.
