Aims, contents and method of the course
The following topics will be dealt with.1) The rise, decline and renewed rise of global history: a briefhistoriographical survey2) Global history as ‘Big history’: From Big Bang to the present3) Global history as history of ecology, ecological frontiers anddemography4) Global history as history of connections: ecological exchange,natural environment, flora, fauna and diseases5) Global history as history of connections: confrontation and war6) Global history as history of connections: economic exchange andintegration7) Global history as history of connections: global commodities8) Global history as history of connections: migration9) Global History as the history of polities: empires, civilizations,world-systems, regions10) Global history as comparative history: convergences and divergences
Assessment and permitted materials
There will be a written exam about the content of the lectures and of the literature that has used
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Goal: to illustrate theories and methods of global history by means of topics and the way they have been dealt with by famous global historians in famous books.

Literature, in principle short reviews/ articles that have to be read as background before every class, will be made available.
