Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This Guided Reading course shall be focused on the history of the Habsburg Monarchy from 1815 to 1918 as presented in the English-speaking scholarship. Students will critically engage with contemporary sources and scholarly literature, gain a thorough understanding of specific issues through case-studies while deepening their understanding of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Habsburg history.
The relevant scholarly literature and/or written sources is arranged both thematically and in chronological order, following two central questions: was the Habsburg monarchy an empire, and how did it accommodate its many nationalities?
After completing the course, the students shall be familiarized with key topics ranging from modernization and integration to the empire, the 1848/49 revolution and independence, the 1867 compromise and dual state construct, development of state infrastructures and civil society, the formation of national, confessional and political identities, economic and demographic developments, bourgeoisification, mentalities and ways of living, and finally World War I and the collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy

Assessment and permitted materials

The evaluation is based on continuous assessment without a final exam. In the course of the semester, students will have to prepare several short- or mid-size written assignments (1-2 pages). These exercises will allow them to develop their ability to summarize, analyze and identify arguments and hypothesis. They will also have to prepare a bibliography and present one of the sessions in form of an Inputreferat.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This course is based on continuous assessment (max. 2 absences). The final evaluation is divided as following :
- Reading of the mandatory texts and uploading a weekly Leseprotokoll on the Moodle platform + active participation to the class discussion (20%)
- Completion of the assigned homework: summaries and essays (60%)
- Oral presentation of a session (20%)
