Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Please note: This course starts on Tuesday 11 March 2025

This course is mandatory for the 2nd year students of the EMGS program but open for students from other programs and curricula of history as well. It is held in English. It is designed to help master students who attended the Graduate College 1 during the Winter Semester 2024-2025 to reflect further about the design of their master thesis projects and start the writing process.

During Graduate College 2 the students will ideally write the first drafts of 2-3 chapters of their thesis, with a view to receive concrete feedback from the lecturer and the other students in the class, before or in parallel with submitting the draft chapters to their supervisors.

In each class, the students will be invited to reflect systematically on one perspective of their research and the related writing process. Among others: the empirical and theoretical dimensions of the research question(s); the analysis of primary sources; spatiality; temporality; the actors (individual, groups, organizations); structuring chapters, sections and sub-themes; constructing of the narrative.

The students will engage in plenary discussions and work in groups (possibly clustered according to similar research themes, foci and approaches). They will be invited to analyze and deconstruct the works of other scholars, and propose for discussion scholarly texts, primary sources and key concepts/theoretical approaches which they encounter in their own research process.
