Language and Nationalism in Europe during the long 19th Century (1789-1918)

4.00 ECTS (2.00 SWS), SPL 7 - Geschichte
Continuous assessment of course work

The nineteenth century is often called the age of nationalism. Over the long 19th Century, multi-ethnic empires and composite monarchies ceased to exist and most of the current European states arose. Individuals came to identify with abstract national communities based on shared beliefs about religion, ethnicity and/or language. Language appeared as one of the most value-laden instruments for creating and maintaining social realities. We will begin by defining nationalism and introduce students to some of the most important authors and scholarly traditions in nationalism (and language) studies. Later, we will explore the role of nationalism in language-making, and the role of language in nationalism, in various European regions throughout the long 19th Century.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Teaching consists in 8 sessions of 3 hours lectures. Language of instruction is English, though German is welcome as well; participants have to prepare texts on the basis of questions distributed in advance of every meeting. On that basis the texts will be discussed at the different meetings. Answers to questions distributed in advance have to be handed in in writing. In order to start discussions students are required to give very brief talks summarising their written answers for one specific meeting.
Aims: After successfully completing this GR, students will be familiar with representative texts and documents, and they will have achieved a basic knowledge of theories, concepts, policies and practices concerning language and nationalism in Europe during the long 19th Century (1789-1918).

Assessment and permitted materials

quality of written answers to questions distributed in advance for each meeting; introductory talk on the basis of written answers; two reviews on a problem discussed in the seminar; contributions to discussions. This GR-course will be taught in English, and we will read and study texts and documents in this language; therefore, a very good command of English is a necessary precondition for successful class attendance.
