Aims, contents and method of the course

The course and excursion Global Vienna - The Danube River and Urban Planning will provide details to understand the Danube River's socio-economic relevance, its ecological and historical dynamics and its relevance for Vienna's urban development. The River Danube connects Vienna with the Slovak capital city Bratislava. Including Bratislava in the course and excursion will allow a comparative approach to the recent and historical importance of the river in international perspective.
Vienna is a global city in many ways. This course and excursion will focus on one connection of the city of Vienna to the world: the Danube River. First of all the Danube River is the worlds most international waterway and an important route for traffic and transport within Europe and beyond. Furthermore the Danube River is in several aspects of international and global relevance for a global Vienna: It is a tourist attraction as well as a part of city-marketing in global competition for tourists. It is the key element of the Waterfront urban planning strategies, following a worldwide phenomena of urban development along bodies of water. And it attracts international investments in real estate and office space (e.g. The Danube City, Marina Towers).

Assessment and permitted materials

- Continuous assessment of active participation in class and during the excursion
- Presentation of the group work / the paper

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

- Understand the river Danubes formative impact an Vienna and its environment.
- Get insight in the international importance of the river, e.g. by connecting Vienna and Bratislava
- Improve theoretical and research skills by writing a scientific paper in a group alonbg a choosen topic

Examination topics

- Input on theories and empirical research results
- Interactive work in groups in selected topics
- Work on a paper in groups
- Coordination of theoretical work and research both in class, during the excursion and in research individually and in the group
- Presentation and discussion of the results in class
