Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

History is strongly present in society in the form of historical culture. Finished and closed historical accounts and sometimes historical myths are to be found in history textbooks, movies, newspapers, museums, digital games etc. Furthermore, the digital world is heavily influenced by fake news and conspiracy theories with historical and political references. Thus, the development of the ability and the willingness to scrutinise critically representations of history in society is a central aim of historical learning. Especially the empowerment of pupils to deal with history in the internet in reflective ways turned out to be an important challenge in the last decades.

In this course students will engage in theories of historical learning with regard to historical culture and starting from these they will work on corresponding methods and teaching approaches. A special focus will be laid on methods for distance teaching and online learning. Virtual classrooms and in this context the production of teaching videos have increased in importance since the Corona Pandemic. Thus, in this course different tools will be presented and used by students, with which digital learning processes concerning historical culture can be initiated. In this context, students will produce a teaching video on their own.

Students will work out teaching matrial and they will write an essay in which they will reflect on this teaching material (3-5 pages).
They will produce a teaching video to a topic related to historical culture.
There will be further small assignments during the semester.
