Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

THE SUMMARY OF THE COURSE:
The course will discuss the manifold ways of reform that took place in Central and Eastern Central Europe in the fifteenth century. It will also discuss the cutting line between reform and heresy in the given period. It will present the case of the Hussite reformers in medieval Bohemia and subsequently focus on the mission of the key player in the papal response to the Hussite heresy, John of Capestrano. Nevertheless, the course will also thematise different other reform movements of the century in the Central European region, the regional specificities of the observant movement, and the effect of the church synods (Constance and Basel) and several other monastic reforms, such as the Raudnitz (Roudnice nad Labem) or the Melk reforms, and their consequences. It will also be discussed how these reforms and reform movements influenced the religious life of the contemporaries on a long run. The course will cover a wide range of topics and for this reason is designed as a blended learning model with the involvement of various experts on individual topics, including lecturers from the Palacky University of Olomouc, the Masaryk University of Brno, Catholic University of Lublin, and the University of Budapest.

OBJECTIVES:
See: http://www.univie.ac.at/geschichte/studienplan
In addition:
- Ability to independently comprehend, analyze and evaluate a problem based on the state of research (including theories and methods).
- Ability to critically analyze and interpret written sources, to develop questions and theses and to argue precisely.
- The focus is also on deepening knowledge through the systematic discussion of academic literature. This will be carried out in the context of joint discussions, individual study of literature and sources as well as an independent scholarly presentation.

METHODS AND PROOF OF PERFORMANCE:
The seminar consists of several regular sessions and presentation sessions. After the joint reading and discussion of some basic texts, individual presentations will be prepared and presented. The above skills are assessed due to the regular participation, joint discussion, continuous preparation of the readings and the presentations, which should attest the students' individual research work, and finally the written seminar paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is immanent to examination; consequently, the following criteria will be used to judge performance:
Attendance (MANDATORY!), continuous active participation and taking part in the general discussions, short presentations, and written seminar paper.
Independent registration within the registration phase at the beginning of the semester is mandatory for participation in this course! Subsequent registration or deregistration is NOT possible. Attendance is compulsory in the first course unit: Students who fail to attend the first unit without excuse lose their place in the course and students from the waiting list can move up.
The basis for assessment is:
- regular attendance (only one absence will be tolerated)
- regular text reading, preparation for the seminar units including independent participation in the discussions
- regular submission of a presentation slide or a short reflection paper per (and before each) session on the basis of the questionnaire distributed at the beginning of the course and several impulse presentations of texts based on one’s own slides or reflection papers
- active (!) oral participation during the semester
- submitting a written seminar paper at the end of the course.
To ensure good scientific practice, the course instructor may provide for an oral reflection on the written work submitted, which must be successfully completed.
