This class offers a broad introduction to scholarly debates, different methodological approaches and current research trends at the intersection of urban and social history, focusing on several thematic aspects of high and late medieval Central and East-Central European regions. Against this background, the course aims at the critical analysis and common discussion of selected publications (articles, chapters from monographs, and published sources) and the individual presentations of the seminar participants. On the one hand, the readings deal with the criteria of urbanity, medieval urban development, similarities and regional peculiarities. On the other hand, the discussion focuses on the different legal, administrative, economic, religious, ethnic and social dimensions of community (and community building), as well as the practical aspects of communal life in medieval (early modern) urban context.
The first part of the seminar will serve as a background with its readings and discussions to the preparation of a seminar paper at the end. The topics for the papers will be focused around Viennese families and role in the urban life and their networks in the late medieval period (1480s-1520s).OBJECTIVES:
- See: http://www.univie.ac.at/geschichte/studienplan
- In addition: Ability to independently comprehend, analyze and evaluate a problem based on the state of research (including theories and methods).
- Ability to critically analyze and interpret written sources, to develop questions and theses and to argue precisely.
- The focus is also on deepening knowledge through the systematic discussion of academic literature. This will be carried out in the context of joint discussions, individual study of literature and sources as well as an independent scholarly presentation.METHODS AND PROOF OF PERFORMANCE:
The seminar consists of several regular sessions and presentation sessions. After the joint reading and discussion of some basic texts, individual presentations will be prepared and presented. The above skills are assessed due to the regular participation, joint discussion, continuous preparation of the readings and the presentations, which should attest the students' individual research work, and finally the written seminar paper.
