Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The Mauthausen concentration camp, which existed from 1938 to 1945, was one of the central locations of the National Socialist terror and spanned a network of over 40 satellite camps across what is Austria today. The history of this concentration camp complex is of central importance for research into National Socialism in Austria.The seminar aims to offer opportunities to research the history of the Mauthausen concentration camp complex i) by reading and discussing key texts, ii) by visiting the Mauthausen Memorial and iii) in discussions with three experts. Gregor Holzinger is invited to present his studies on "perpetrator research" on November 8, 2021, Christian Angerer will discuss examples within the history of Literature addressing the concentration camp experience on November 29, 2021, Christian Fleck will be available for a discussion on sociological research into the concentration camps on December 13, 2021.
Assessment and permitted materials
The course is dedicated to reading and discussing basic texts on the history of the Mauthausen concentration camp complex; a self-organized guided tour of the Mauthausen Memorial is scheduled for October 15, 2021, including a visit to the new permanent exhibitions onsite. This visit is intended to encourage the participants to choose an own research topic, which is to be presented in the course and further developed in a written paper.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Regular participation and collaboration, especially in reading and discussing texts (30%)
Presentation of a self-chosen topic on the history of the Mauthausen concentration camp complex (30%)
