Assessment and permitted materials
The aim of the seminar is to learn to formulate a scientific work based on a historical topic. Students will choose a topic they will progressively elaborate along the semester. They will research primary sources as well as secondary literature, and learn how the exploit them. During the semester, they will have to present in 10-15 minutes a preliminary analysis of their reflection and sources, that will be discussed together with the other students. These oral presentations will be the basis of the PS-work (Seminararbeit).Students are expected to read all the assigned texts before each class, and to actively contribute to class discussion.
Assessment will be based on:
- the active participation to the class and the discussions
- the oral presentation and the final PS-work

The aim of the seminar is to provide students with basic knowledge of the key topics of the period, while introducing them to a more specific field of knowledge production and governance. They will be guided through the main secondary and primary sources, and the methodological issues related to them. The first half of the semester will be dedicated to a general introduction (production of ethnic, demographic, economic etc. statistics, actors involved, emergence of experts and evolution of practices, ideological and political implications, international standardization…). This should help the students to define their own questioning, which they will present in class during the second half of the semester. The oral presentation and the ensuing discussion will provide the basis of the PS-work.
