Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This module explores methods for studying the history and memory of the genocide of Jews, Roma, and other victims of Nazi persecution through personal accounts. Focusing in particular on the narratives told by survivors, the module will explore a range of sources, including diaries, interviews, restitution claims, and video testimony. We will consider how class, gender, ethnicity or sexuality influence how survivors tell their stories, and which stories are heard. We will also discuss the broader social and political contexts in which such sources are produced, and archives documenting the history and memory of genocide are constructed. Finally, we will explore a range of methodological tools that historians might use to interpret and analyse these sources.
