The seminar consists of three days, two days (seven units) of preparation and one day of study trips in Vienna. On day one the instructors will provide the participants with a tool kit for the analysis of global production networks with the example of aluminum production in Africa. The students will use this tool kit to analyze other sectors of their choice like the garment industry or the computer industry and present their findings. On day two the consequences of global production and possible challenges and ways forward will be compiled and discussed. The students will form three to five groups to focus on one of the specific challenges that can be related to institutions in Vienna. These institutions can be NGOs, international organizations, local political institutions or companies. One month later, on day three, we will visit these institutions. After a short introduction by the representatives of these institutions, the students will do interviews and moderate discussions with the representatives that should already be based on preliminary versions of their seminar papers. The study trips end with a short debriefing session and with feedback on the first version of the seminar papers.
