Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture will discuss and analyze the topics from the research fields of New Imperial History, administrative history and the history of knowledge of the Habsburg Monarchy. The focus is on the core themes of modern Habsburg history: the shaping and self-assertion of central governmental power in the Habsburg Lands, the material and intellectual resources of state power, political participation and social integration, national identification through education, production and consumption of science and culture in urban and non-metropolitan milieus, social and political conflicts.

The lecture will discuss central questions and perspectives of the newer research literature on state-building, social dynamics and scientific practices in the modern Habsburg Monarchy, while drawing on written, visual and multimedia sources.

The learning outcome is familiarity with the themes and methods of newer research on the Habsburg Monarchy, particularly aspects regarding state-building, the history of the public administration, the history of Habsburg culture and knowledge in a social context. Good English reading skills are mandatory.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written examination based on the syllabus (set by sessions). Alternative assignments such as a review, image/film analysis, source commentary or an essay, may substitute up to half of the examination points. These must be submitted before the written examination.

Knowledge of the syllabus: theoretical and methodological approaches, issues and argumentation, key content and events.
