Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The aim of the course is to gain an overview of the medieval urban development of Central, East Central, and partially Southern Europe – namely, that of the medieval Austrian, Bohemian, Hungarian, Croatian and Dalmatian territories. The general aim is to be familiar with the basic research questions and debates in urban history, the state of research and the availability and character of source material, the characteristics of towns, the regional peculiarities as well as the network of urban communities in the region. Based on selected readings (book chapters, monographs, articles and relevant, edited sources) a few general as well as relevant new issues of urban history will be discussed during the seminar.
Assessment and permitted materials
The seminar is examination free and aims at interactive discussions and also individual presentations
Grading is based on:
- regular participation
- regular readings (for each week) and preparation for discussion
- preparation of short handouts and summaries of the readings
- individual research and oral presentation
- active participation in the discussion during the semester and a short seminar paper to be written afterwards

Examination topics
The aim is the critical reading of scholarly literature and historical sources, the deeper content analysis, formulating questions and developing ideas and opinion about the texts and topics on the agenda.
