Aims, contents and method of the course

Introduction: History of political terms and ideas, history of political ideas in transition
Guiding questions: Political ideas, theories, languages, ideologies, currents
Theories of politics and political thought:
* Political thought and political theories in classical antiquity
* Political theories in the Middle Ages
* Political theories of the Early Modern Era
* Political thought in corporate societies
* Political currents of the 19th and 20th centuries
* Political theories today
* Political thought beyond Europe
* Ideas of peace, internationalísm, imperialism, colonialism, and regionalism

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam (90 minutes) comprising knowledge and comprehension Those students who attend the lecture course within the EC Geschichte (elective module Political History) where this lecture has 5 ECTS, have to submit a short scientific paper (5 pages with footnotes) in addition.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic knowledge and orientation about the history of political thought and political currents across age and regions
Knowledge of core terms, theories and narratives of political thought
Basic knowledge of the range of sources of the history of political thought
Knowledge of fundamental sources of the history of political thought
Basic knowledge about the position of the history of political thought within the historical science and about the history of the discipline
Ability to historically classify political ideas and currents
Basic ability to handle problems of the history of political thought
Basic ability to deal with theories and narratives of the history of political thought
Basic ability to recognize the historicity of political ideas and currents and to deal with them in a critical way
Basic ability to use acquired knowledge in topical debates
Ability to analyze the political dimension of societal, economic and cultural problems
Basic ability to handle theoretical texts
