Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The Crusades are perhaps the most well-known, and the most misunderstood, moment in medieval history. They are a conflict between faiths and cultures that have shaped history for over nine hundred years and remain relevant today. This course will examine these crusades in their historical context – it will look at the crusaders using their own words and the writings of those whom they fought against. In addition to primary source discussion, the course will also use Reacting to the Past roleplaying games to create an immersive understanding of the crusades. Finally, students will write reviews for two pieces of crusade literature, one from the nineteenth century, like Walter Scott’s "The Talisman", and one from the 'writings' of twentieth and twenty-first-century extremists - both jihadist and 'alt-right' - to see how the crusades' legacy continues to exert itself in our own times.
