Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Programme:

16.5. Vienna-Dublin 20.20-22.05
20.5. Dublin-Vienna 07.20-11.10

The historical excursion to Dublin and its environs is primarily for students who have attended lectures or courses of Doz. McLoughlin on Irish History. Such students will therefore be given priority.
Some or all of the sites mentioned below will be visited on the basis of availability and schedule:

17.5. Excursion to Glendalough

18.5.
Trinity College
National Gallery of Ireland
Irish music session

19.5. National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street
National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks
Evening at the theatre (optional)

Costs
Including return flight and airport taxes, airport-hotel bus link, four nights bed and breakfast in the Tara Towers Hotel, bus-fare for excursion to Glendalough and entry to Visitors' Centre:

3 sharing: Euro 570
2 sharing: Euro 590
single: Euro 740

Assessment and permitted materials

Participants will write a ten-page essay (including title-cover and literature consulted) on:
a) their impressions of Dublin; b) explaining in detail the importance of one of the historical sites they have visited.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

By visiting places of historical interest in Ireland's capital the excursion participants will deepen their knowledge of Irish history and gain an insight in Dublin's cultural life. They will also have an opportunity to improve their language skills and to acquire literature on Irish history and culture in Dublin's well-stocked bookstores or in the specialised museum shops. Taking part in a group excursion abroad is also a valuable experience for the individual and, hopefully, an impulse to specialise in some aspect of Irish history at a later stage of studies.

Examination topics

In addition to the constant stream of information from the excursion leader, at each site visited the participants will take part in a guided tour by experts.
