Aims, contents and method of the course

The role of the state in economic development in the early modern era, a global comparison

General introduction

2/3 The ideas about the role of the state in economic development of some influential economists

4) The history of state formation in Europe in the early modern era

5) Mercantilism and its opponents

6/7) The case of Great Britain

8/9) States and state-formation outside Europe. Clichees and realities

12) The Ottoman Empire/ The Mughal Empire

Assessment and permitted materials

The grade will be based on participation, presentation and paper: 20/ 20 and 60 percent

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To learn how analyze scholarly texts, to give a presentation about a specific topic from the course content and to write a paper on a selected topic

Examination topics

This is a course, that means that active participation is required, plus one oral presentation and a final paper

Reading list

Literature for general background reading, and presentation will be provided. Students how to look for their own literature for the final paper.
