Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course analyzes the history of the Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states from the reign of Maria Theresa to World War II from the perspective of women's and gender history. Through the analysis of exemplary female biographies, the course discusses recent approaches to the history of political rule and revolutions, labor and migrations, science and literature, and law and politics. It asks about social constructions of masculinity, femininity, and sexualities in different periods and spaces, and about women's strategies for inscribing themselves in or combating male power structures.Learning Objectives: The course discusses recent approaches to the history of women and gender using historical case studies to question conventional narratives about historical categories and narratives about modernity in the Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states, such as those of (cautious) liberalization, democratization, or social surveillance and totalitarianism.
