Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this class we will analyze and discuss key texts - books and their reviews and articles - that have been published about what since the book by Kenneth Pomeranz of 2000 has become known as the Great Divergence, the emergence of a big difference in wealth between several parts of the world sometime in the early modern period.
Assessment and permitted materials
Every participant has to give a presentation about one core text during class and write a paper in English. Active participation in the debates during class on the basis of some background reading is required. The assessment will be on the basis of presentation (20 per cent); participation (20 per cent) and paper (60 per cent)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
To introduce students, on the base of original texts, in one of the most lively and relevant debates in global economic history during the last two decades.
Examination topics
A seminar in which core texts in the debate are introduced, analyzed and 'evaluated'.
Reading list
Background literature will be provided during the course. The presentations have to be based on the close reading of one book that played a major role in the debate. The papers will be based on a more extensive literature.
