Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course delves into the role of the League of Nations, created in 1920, in relation to the Habsburg successor states during the interwar period. Students will explore how these new states, but also their population, interacted with the League to address critical issues such as border dispute, minority right, economic reconstruction, but also intellectual cooperation, trafficking or public health.
They will get familiar with the recent scholarship stemming from a renewed interest in the League as a first “international experiment”, and will learn to navigate its archive (available online).

Assessment and permitted materials

The aim of the seminar is to learn to write a scientific work based on a historical topic. Students will choose a topic they will progressively elaborate along the semester. They will be guided in their research of primary sources as well as secondary literature, and learn how to exploit them: the semester is designed to enable them to learn step-by-step the process of academic writing.

During the first half of the semester, students will have to prepare weekly short reports related to the reading assignments (Leseprotokoll). In the second half
of the semester, they will each present in max. 10 minutes a preliminary analysis of their reflection and sources, that will be discussed together with the other students. These oral presentations will be the basis of the seminar paper.

Students are expected to read all the assigned texts before each class, and to actively contribute to class discussion.

Seminar paper of approx. 65,000 characters (± 5%), including spaces and footnotes, title page, table of contents, bibliography, without graphics (= approx. 25 manuscript pages, 1½ lines, 12 pt, Times New Roman); short summary (abstract) of approx. 1,000 characters.
