Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture will introduce at first into the interdisciplinary field of nationalism studies and show competing models of interpretation. After a brief overview of older traditions of studying nationalism it will present and discuss key works by Ernest Gellner, Benedict Anderson, Eric Hobsbawm, Antony Smith, Miroslav Hroch and Rogers Brubaker and their specific personal and disciplinary background. The second focus of the lecture will rest upon the historical development of nation building and modern nationalism. The goal is to differenciate by area and time, which might help to understand why modern nationalism produced very different results in various parts of Europe. Due to the 20th anniversary of the outbreak of the war in Bosnia and Hercegovina, special attention will be dedicated to the former Yugoslavia. This is already part of the specific case studies which will be presented in the third part of the lecture. The choice of other case studies may also depend on the specific interests of the students who will attend the lecture. Regular attention and a substantial reading load is therefore pivotal for its success, elements of discussion will be introduced in order to enhance the training in academic English. The lecture is adressing on the one hand students who are interested in studying nation building and nationalism in the 19th and 20th century, on the other hand students who need more knowledge in nationalism studies for other areas of interest and possibly MA- or diploma theses.
