Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The primary purpose of this course is to explore the historical evolution of the notion "Cultural Diplomacy" by examining the experience of Tsarist Russia and Soviet Union. Both employed cultural products as tools for political and economic influence. As we navigate different aspects of the Cultural Diplomacy concept, we delve into the wide range of objects and events, with a diverse array of sources to identify and analyse. These sources include official documents, diplomatic correspondence, various publications, press reviews, catalogues, films, theatre / music / opera performances or artworks.
Aligned with the transnational perspective of cultural history, the course helps to understand the mutual interinfluences and connections between different countries and Russian Empire / Soviet Union. By examining how cultural elements were employed as instruments of diplomatic influence, the students will gain a comprehensive understanding of international relations during studied period and develop a broader comprehension of cultural elements as part of this history.
