Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course the following topics will be discussed: * definitions of the modern territorial state and views of the main schools of economic thought with regard to the role of the state in economic development; the big variety of states and state-like polities in the early modern world * the formation of territorial national states in Europe and their main characteristics plus those of the big empires in the rest of the world, primarily in East Asia (China and Japan) and the Mughal and Ottoman Empire * the importance of the state from a quantitative perspective (income, expenditures, public debts, the government as employer * the importance of the state an institution, its economic policies and their plus their intended and unintended consequences

4) The history of state-formation in West and Central Europe in the early modern era: a description and a general analysis
5) Thinking about the role of the state in early modern Europe: mercantilism and its opponents
6/7) Mercantilism in action: the case of Britain
8/9) States and state-formation outside Europe: clichés and realities
10/11) Economic policies in China: practices and ideals
12) Economic policies in the Ottoman and Mughal Empires
13) The Japanese Case

Assessment and permitted materials

Marking will be on the basis of the evaluation of the participation of the students in the discussion, of their oral presentation and of the final paper they have to write. Main goal of the course is to introduce students in the debates on political and institutional preconditions of economic development by means of a comparative analysis
