Was it only Canossa? The crisis of the eleventh century
Continuous assessment of course work
Labels
For the cultural memory of Germans and Austrians, the main event of the eleventh century is Canossa (1077) -- when a pope, Gregory VII, humiliated Henry IV and forced him to penance. The late eleventh century did constitute a turning point in the history of the Latin West, but there is more to it than popes versus kings -- high political history from above. The forces that sided with the revolutionary pope Gregory have to be explained -- in particular the desires for reform "from below".
