Aims, contents and method of the course

The South China Sea. European and Chinese Influence, Destruction and Reconstruction in a Historic Region
This course will provide students with a hands on experience in writing different kinds of scientific texts and point out techniques for tackling common difficulties in dealing with such. The importance of scientific theory as guiding system for their work will be underlined as well as the generic structure of the most common kinds of scientific written work – ranging from posters to full-scale theses and monographs.

Students will be introduced to various kinds of academic texts and also tasked with creating some these by themselves. Helpful techniques like improved time management, presentation techniques, how to’s on handouts and digital presentation methods will be conveyed just like motivational strategies to handle larger projects. One session will also cover the basics of how to write project applications on an international level. Finally frequently asked questions concerning the own scientific work will be addressed ranging from how to find a suitable theme up to theoretical structuring and optical refinement of a thesis.

A number of sample texts will be provided online (Moodle) and be made available step by step.
Students will be asked to read sample texts, write, review and discuss scientific texts of different kinds. There will be solitary and group assignments complemented by work during the course in different groups and at home tasks. Each student will furthermore be required to write an essay and present it briefly in a final congress session. The lecturer will accompany the respective work and provide helpful insights into fruitful work and give an overview of dos and don'ts of academic writing. In a special session also the theme writing project applications will be addressed and valuable hints, based on practical experience will be given.

Length of the texts will vary according to difficulty level and type of the respective materials.

The materials provided will be either in English or other languages (Chinese, French, e.a.) with English translation.

Assessment and permitted materials

Presentation at final congress and a number of written assignments revolving around the production of scientific texts.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Compulsory attendance;
Grade: attendance and active participation (30%), presentation at final congress (30%), written assignments (40%)
